Career

With formal education still a rare privilege, Joseph chose the medical profession, joining Mbarara Hospital as a dresser and training on the job. Through years of dedication, he rose to the rank of medical assistant, retiring in 1956. Patients trusted him deeply — some preferred going untreated over seeing anyone else — and even the local Asian community regarded him as their personal physician.

Retirement did not last. The colonial administration recalled him into public service, appointing him sub-county (gombolola) chief of Rugando in 1956. He went on to serve at Kyamugorani, Mabona, and Rubindi, before being named Executive Officer of the Kamukuzi Planning Area. He was finally granted full retirement with pension in 1965 — closing a career defined by trust, fairness, and steady leadership.

In 1937, he embarked on family life and went on to build not only a loving family but also a lasting enterprise. He founded Katatumba’s Farm Ltd., an agricultural venture that included cattle, poultry, and turkey farming. Together with his children, he nurtured the business through hard work, discipline, and visionary leadership. Over time, the enterprise flourished, growing into what is today known as Katatumba Properties—a lasting symbol of his entrepreneurial spirit and the strong family values he passed on to future generations.
