Joseph Bwitirire Katatumba I — the man from whom the Katatumba name draws its pride today — was born in 1914 at Bwenkoma village, near Mbarara town, the only son of Rwekishokye. Raised in a pastoral household, he rose through hard work and quiet dignity to become a respected medical assistant, a trusted colonial-era chief, and ultimately the founder of a family legacy that still shapes Bwenkoma today. Devoted to his faith, his community, and above all to his family’s education, he built a life defined by service to others.
He was much more than a respected medical professional, administrator, entrepreneur, and community leader. He earned a reputation for fairness, honesty, wisdom, and justice. He was a man of unwavering integrity whose life was defined by service to God, dedication to family, compassion for humanity, and an unshakable belief that education was the greatest inheritance a parent could leave to future generations.
His enduring philosophy was:
“The best thing you can do for your child is education.”
That vision inspired institutions, businesses, and generations of leaders who continued building upon his dream.
His Christian faith guided every aspect of his life. Joseph B. Katatumba was influential not only in the government, but also in religious circles. His love for the Christian religion was well known and, before his premature death, he built up a magnificently designed church at Bwenkoma for his village Catholic community. He was a deeply committed Christian leader. On 20 September 1979, his life was tragically cut short, but his legacy continues through his children, grandchildren, and the many lives influenced by his example.
